Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add onions and fry for 8-10 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Add ginger, garlic, and chilli flakes, stirring for 2-3 minutes.

Season the beef with black pepper and five-spice powder. Mix to coat evenly and add to the pan. Fry for 3-4 minutes until lightly browned.

Transfer the mixture to a slow cooker. Pour in the stock and stir in the soy sauce. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours until tender.

Whisk cornflour with 1 tablespoon of water to make a paste and stir in honey. Add to the slow cooker, cover, and cook for 12-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Serve the beef with steamed rice, boiled noodles, or stir-fried vegetables.
